How to split huge PDF documents for free

At work, one of the attorneys had a humongous PDF document she needed to email a lot of other attorneys outside the office. I tried extracting pages with an old version of Adobe Acrobat (v5), but the original file still kept the same size (despite having deleted the pages).
With open source (free) software, I [...]

Prevent the Internet Archive Wayback Machine from archiving your website

A coworker asked me of a website that tracks different versions of websites. I forgot what it was (gasp) but my boss remembered that it’s the Internet Archive Wayback Machine.
I checked All Narfed Up to see if it was tracked, only to find out I blocked it eons ago. (See?)
If you don’t want its spiders [...]

Speed up podcasts for free with foobar2000

A commenter (Freddie) was struggling with speeding up podcasts with Audacity. (See my how-to on speeding up podcasts with Audacity, version 1 and version 2.) Then, he found this article:
“Time stretching [MP3s] and other audio” by Blake Tolbert
I haven’t tried foobar2000 — because I’ve only been into the Kevin and Bean’s podcast from KROQ lately [...]

How to free over 4 GB of space on Windows XP

Using TreeSize Free, I found that I had over 4 GB of files taken up in:
C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\
All those sub-folders are temporary, but they haven’t gotten cleared out. CCleaner doesn’t touch this folder, either. Very odd. I deleted them and haven’t noticed anything wrong yet. *knock on wood*
Thunderbird users — Also, I [...]

TinyURL Popup Preview

Since I communicate with Twitter, TinyURL is the standard service used for sharing shortened links with others. (I use Tweetl, though, but that’s another story.)
If you get the TinyURL Popup Preview Greasemonkey Script, you won’t get surprised when you click on a link. (via LifeSpy)
I wish there were more services supported, but this is a [...]

Download files in Firefox with one click and keystroke

If you already have a default folder setup, the dialog always defaults to “Save As”, this’ll save time:
Alt + Left-click
Before? Right-click download link > Save Link As > Save

Tips to manage browser bookmarks 98% effortlessly

The less data (files) I have to worry about my computers, the better. Amazon S3 + JungleDisk work nightly, backing up the more crucial folders. Almost weekly, I synchronize everything to an external hard drive.
Bookmarks are a different story.
When it comes to saving awesome sites/pages on the internets, I use the following:

del.icio.us
Google Browser Sync
AM-DeadLink

With del.icio.us, [...]

[VZW] Migrate your contacts to a new cellphone with Backup Assistant

If you use Verizon Wireless and their online service, My Account, you can use Backup Assistant for free!

I love that it [...]

One final exam remains

This morning, I took my English 102 final. It was pretty laid back, especially because it was open book and open note. I was just shooting for a B or a C. There were a few works of literature that I didn’t read carefully: “A Doll’s House” by Henrik Ibsen and “Antigone” by Sophicles. The [...]
