Slight progress
I upgraded to WordPress 1.5.1.1. I haven’t tried pinging anyone, nor will I test it out. When the time comes, I’ll find out if they work. Otherwise, all seems to be okay.
MX records for email still isn’t setup, and I’m not sure how to set it up. Waiting for more information from my host (if he can give it to me somehow). However, looking at his DNS report, it basically matches mine at this time. I haven’t gotten a response from emailing him last night, so maybe his email is down too. In the meantime, remember: use my contact form, and email me at Gmail.
Email issues
I’m having trouble with my configuration at DynDNS and my MX entry. It’s gone now because it wasn’t working anymore, and I can’t quite remember what it used to be before. Whatever was working before wouldn’t let me keep it now.
My host contacted me and told me to just switch to his nameservers (with good reason - at least things would work just fine), but I paid for these awesome DNS services. All I need to do is figure out how to get it working again. Once it works, all will be “perfect”.
I’ve emailed DynDNS support - I hope they reply really soon, because I’d like to get this working before I’m out Saturday for most of the day. I’m sure emails to my domain are bouncing back to you like crazy. Sorry for the trouble! Send them to my Gmail account (use the contact form), and I can get back to you that way.
Ugh, afternoon yesterday. I’ve been trying to fix this long enough, and I don’t think I can do anything further, so I’ll try again in the morning if I have time. (Sorry!)
Server upgrade complete
The server change is done. I didn’t change the IP earlier, and didn’t ask my host until this morning - plus I didn’t get to a computer until now. Things should be back to normal right now. Thanks for waiting!
Not touching anything
My host is upgrading the server I’m on “anytime between 6:00 PM & Midnight on Thursday, May 19. Time is based on Mountain Time (GMT -7:00 hrs).” During those times, I’m not touching anything here. If you comment during those times, it could be lost. Otherwise, all should be fine. Thanks.
Happy Valentine’s Day
I hope all of you have a happy Valentine’s Day! Being inspired by Google and WordPress, I felt compelled to change the color around here. I’m sure it’s not the best, but I changed it up in a couple minutes. Better than nothing, I suppose. The text is made from Scriptina, which wasn’t detected in Gimp, so I had to do that in MSPaint. It works. Ctrl+F5 if you don’t see red everywhere. 
Dumb link exchange requests
Every once in awhile, I’ll get an email through my contact form requesting a link exchange. I’ll waste a few bytes to show you how stupid it is.
This blog down earlier
I don’t know why this was down earlier. When I woke up at 7am PST, it was down. I first emailed my host, then tried restoring a previous database backup, but that didn’t work. I also tried overwriting the files on the server (in case they got changed somehow), but that wasn’t it either. I have a cron job setup to check my blogroll link to see if any has been updated, and I deleted that in case that was the problem. All seems to be fine again, but I don’t know if my host had anything to do with it. It’s all weird because I’m webhosting two friends for their classes (they’re both elementary school teachers), and those were fine. The forums were fine, too, so that ruled out a MySQL error. So…I don’t know. I’m going to school, and I hope things stay fine - at least until I get back in about 5 hours. (Not before I do a backup!)
Forum pruning
People tell me that if the forums aren’t broke, don’t fix it. They may not be broke, but they’re outdated versions of IPB. I’m definitely not sure if they’re open to hacking. However, I’m liking the speed and simplicity that WordPress has brought me. Speaking of speed, I’m really leaning towards switching the forums over to PunBB. Why? This is why.
I have a feeling my friends that do frequent the forums might not like this. Until I get more feedback, I’ll be trimming the fat from the forums. Here’s some tasks I’ll be going through:
- Removing members that haven’t posted at all
- Removing members that haven’t posted in a year, and don’t seem to have any signs of coming back
- Deleting images from really old posts to free up server space (also making it easier to backup the forum folder)
The first two items won’t be done until tomorrow night around 8:00pm PST. In any case, could you please give me some of your thoughts on this between now and then? Thanks!
Hot Deals forum moderated
I’m sick of people registering, posting a hot deal (that’s actually just warm or cold), then linking to their site. I’ve now set it to moderate all new threads, not replies. Also, I nuked all the posts within the last 30 days, because there weren’t any replies to them. Sorry to rasputinj, I’m still trying to figure out whether or not he’s trying to spam or legitimately spread some deals. Perhaps I should just close the forum completely. Bah…
Change forum script?
Chris Lin got his blog up after some downtime. Reading one of his latest asides about the Santy Worm, I’m starting to ponder more about my forums using IPB (Invision Power Board) 1.3.1. The latest version is 2.0.3.
To be on the safe side, perhaps I should just nuke the forums right now and utilize another forum script. At the same time, I’d be weeding out the extraneous members that can’t or won’t frequent anymore. (I’m thinking of PunBB.) Oh yeah, and I think it’ll also show how many forum members we really have…
Any thoughts?
