Instant Messaging
AIM wasn’t working for one of my friends, and as a workaround (until I could look at her laptop), I directed her to Meebo. It must’ve been more than three weeks ago, but she mentioned it last night when we went out to eat with a few people.
“Meebo? What’s that?”
“You know, the website where I could use AIM without installing it? I was reading the blog the other day. They’re meeting at Borders, but that’s in San Francisco, so I can’t really go.” (paraphrased)
Um, whoa, crazy! (FYI: Meebo isn’t the only web-based IM client.)
No, I haven’t tried Google Talk yet. I did read Chris Pirillo’s commentary about IM clients, though, and I have to agree.
I use Gaim to connect to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and Jabber servers. Oh yeah, I’m glad I can add Google to that list. Riiight.
I have a Jabber account now. It took awhile to figure it out, but with a little help from Dan, we’re good to go. For Gaim, you need to pick an open Jabber server, jot it down, then enter it in the Server field when registering/adding an account. (more…)
Update: Basically the same thing has been said from Slashdot. However, in the update at the end of the Houston Chronicle, that still makes me wonder about the wording of the TOS. Does AOL cancel itself out? End update. (more…)
“AIM pwns j00″ is leet speak.
After reading Podz’ post (and the links from it), I think AIM went too far. Basically, anything communicated over their IM servers is theirs to share. I know it’s their software and their service, but if the users don’t have any rights to their conversations, then forget it. Not everyone reads Slashdot, but it’ll be people like me that’ll spread this.
My take? I’ll either IM all the people I know and pass this along, or I’ll setup an away message linking to this for a few days before breaking ties off from AIM.
Please leave comments. This is a big thing, especially since I’ve had my screenname for so long. I’ll need to find another IM service that people can be willing to switch to. Any useful insight that can help me out will probably get this post updated. If you’ll do the same, pass the link to this post to your friends (the title of the post is the link as well).
Well, it’s been at least four days since I’ve been on AIM. I’m not sure why I haven’t gone on, but not always keeping myself logged into AIM has been kinda cool. I’ve been doing other stuff that’s been more productive - somewhat. Does playing the older version of Counter-Strike count as being productive?
I haven’t seen Grouper before, but two features that I think I’d like are the ability to drag and drop files while chatting to people, and the encryption. Sending files through AOL Instant Messenger isn’t that bad, although there are times when transfers won’t go through due to firewall configurations, and the transfers aren’t even encrypted.
I’m posting this in case someone out there might see a big benefit from Grouper. (Thanks Marc.) It is new, so don’t be surprised if there’s a few bugs. I don’t need this program right now, but it’s great to know that I have a viable option if the need arises. (To my close friends - I have a four N-vites for a service that starts with a “G” and ends with “Mail”. If you ever realize how much Hotmail stinks, and want something better, holler at me.)
