Initial experiences and thoughts on Google Voice

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard of Google Voice. I won’t go into its details and assume you’ve read the posts about Google Voice from Lifehacker.1

So, what are my hang-ups?

Tinfoil hat — All my eggs in one basket? I think that’s one reason why I “left” Gmail.

Lose my unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling, text, picture, video messaging — A lot of my friends are on Verizon Wireless. I’d be ditching them. I’d also be losing out on the Friends & Family® feature in my plan.

Don’t think about adding your Google Voice number to that list. From the My Friends & Family® management page:

Telephone numbers must be entered in standard, ten digit format; only domestic landline or wireless numbers (other than directory assistance, 900 numbers, or customer’s own wireless or voice mail access numbers) may be added; all qualifying lines on an account share the same Friends & Family numbers, up to the account’s eligibility limit.

Devin Reams was trying this, but later found that this violates the rules.

I got my invite a week ago. Yesterday, I got my number. But, I’m still not sure if I’m going to use it. Perhaps I’ll wait a month or two to see if Google will address questions like these.

Were you a GrandCentral user before Google bought them out? What can you say to my reasoning?

  1. I don’t know another website discussing Google Voice as comprehensive and insightful as Lifehacker. If you know any sites or blog posts that are, share them in the comments. Don’t spam. I’ll moderate them.

Switched calendaring and tasks to Google and Remember The Milk

I’m barely using my Tungsten E Palm PDA (organizer), so I’ve switched to Google Calendar and Remember The Milk. Fortunately, there wasn’t much to switch over — I’m not that swamped.

Or, my head isn’t cleared out and nothing has been written down for months. =/

Although I keep my email inbox at zero most of the time, I’ve been off the productivity wagon for awhile. I gotta get back to it. One foot after the other, right?

CompanionLink for Google Calendar troubleshooting

I finally spoke to Jeremiah (from CompanionLink) today.

What’s the issue? After the first sync, subsequent syncs prompt if I want to delete events from Palm Desktop, even when none of the data changed.

Jeremiah walked me through some steps to find out what was going on, and I ended up having to send some log files to him so the programmers could look at the issue. It’s sort of over my head, but I’m glad to help troubleshoot this weird behavior. He’ll be contacting me in a day or so after they check it out.

Oh, and Jeremiah’s cool, man. A few of them at their office have red Swingline staplers! (Sounds like someone has a case of the Mondays…)

Google Talk

No, I haven’t tried Google Talk yet. I did read Chris Pirillo’s commentary about IM clients, though, and I have to agree.

I use Gaim to connect to AIM, Yahoo, MSN, and Jabber servers. Oh yeah, I’m glad I can add Google to that list. Riiight.

Harsh ban removed

I retweaked through the robots.txt files just now. I think everything is banned from my whole site, except my forums and blog. From those, I believe I only have Googlebot-Images banned from select folders that contain images.
