Annoying

Maintenence for 75+ computers?

How do I clean and run maintenence on over 75 computers running Windows XP, that are also housing multiple accounts on each system? One by one? (You know, making sure they don’t have extraneous programs, cleaning temporary internet files and cookies, stuff like that.)

Hating the Microsoft Genuine Software check

I downloaded the Microsoft New Zealand theme Royale at work today. At home, I was able to skip the validation, but I had to do it at work. It took like five minutes just to get through the process of getting to the download page!

I was listening to the TWiT podcast episode 14 the other day, and they were talking about some security thing for monitors. Oh, HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) is a must in new TVs. Basically, one of them stated that those protections are only hindering the honest people, because hackers and cracks can create a workaround in a relatively short period of time. I was thinking, “Amen!”

Microsoft wasted my time because I’m an honest customer. It definitely stinks that the unscrupulous 5% of people who use illegal versions of Windows XP is ruining the 95% of honest users. Pretty lame if you ask me.

Who’s calling from Canada?

Someone just tried calling me right now, but I didn’t answer. A 604 area code traces to Vancouver, British Colombia, Canada. Who knows me from there? I think my uncle lives in Montreal, so it can’t be him. I don’t see a voicemail message indicator, so I’m kinda burned. I guess if it was important, they would’ve right? Breath, Bryan.

Update: It’s Chase Credit Card. Sorry I didn’t update sooner. I put it in the comments, though.

Entering BIOS setup on HP & Compaq

I’m working on a HP Pavilion 512n right now, and I couldn’t get into the BIOS (because I didn’t know which key it was). Usually, it’s F2 or Del. After some searching, I found that it’s F1. Why can’t they standardize something so simple? Oh well, back to work.

Don’t give me the pity trip

If you need help with something, and nobody else can help, I will. The more you ramble about why and try to get me to feel sorry for someone, the more you’ll tick me off. Listen: I already agreed to help. (Sorry, my mom got me upset by doing this. It’s the way she is, I know, but it bugged me right now. I’ll deal with it.)

Blogroll broke?

I’m…angry! I’m like a tornado of anger, swirling about!” (Classic Will Ferrell.) Anyway, my blogroll isn’t working. What’s going on around here? Am I alone on this one? Ay yi yi…

PDA alarm usage

If you’re going to use the alarm feature on your PDA:

Be nice to your web developers

If you’re not running a website yourself, and you have someone else on staff doing it, please proofread a thousand times before you send them some text you want published on a new page. Sure, it’ll take a few more days to get it out there. But, do you really want to send your web developer twenty emails asking to change a little here, a little there? (more…)

PHP4 extension

I wanted to try and redo the Public Counsel website to use PHP include, to make it easier to maintain the layout headers, sidebar, and footer. It’s hosted by EarthLink, and I believe they’re on the StarterSite package. I create a phpinfo file, then upload it. When I try to view it, it’s just text. After calling EarthLink, I find out that I need to end the filename with php4! How lame is that? That works.

Party full of strangers

I just came home from my cousins’ birthday party. I got there and headed for their backyard - and knew about 3 people. One man recognized me and said hi, I think expecting me to remember. Then, I went inside where my mom introduced me to someone she said I was apparently close to. I gave her a kiss or something when I was 2. Hmm, aren’t very young kids close to practically everybody? Don’t get me wrong, because they do seem nice. Sure I hugged someone when I was two years old, but it doesn’t mean I’ll remember if I see them 21 years later. I don’t know about you, but my memory of people didn’t kick in when I could barely talk. If I saw you once in my early childhood, there’s no way I’ll remember you. In any case, I spoke to basically my uncle. He’s a riot! Good times. I definitely prefer a smaller group of people. 20-30 is just insane.
