Daylight saving time and your camera
If you observe Daylight saving time (DST), don’t forget to change your camera clock. If you forgot, and you’re a Lightroom user, you can easily edit the capture time.
Photographer harassment and rights discussion on KPFK Los Angeles
Fellow photographers, Shawn Nee (Discarted) and Thomas Hawk will be on the radio at Digital Village (KPFK 90.7 FM) today (Saturday, March 7, 2009) at 10:00am.
Peter Bibring of the ACLU will also be there.
If you can’t listen to the show live, wait for it in their archives.

Shawn helped organize the photowalk/rally near the US Bank Tower in Downtown Los Angeles in late January. As for Thomas, he just takes so many photos that it’s inevitable for him to get harassed. (Someone tells me that I might be the next Thomas Hawk regarding photographer harassment. Oh noes.)
I know this is late, but if you have any points you’d like to bring up, you should post them in this Flickr discussion group thread.
The reason behind my silence

I’m taking Trigonometry because sine, cosine and tangent are my favorite functions.
Kidding.
Like I said a couple weeks ago, I’m back in school at Citrus College. I’m retaking [Plane] Trigonometry because I flunked it a long time ago.
Why?
My senior year in high school, I took an online course from Bakersfield College – statistics. That fulfilled my math requirement for college.
However, when my college counselors were looking at my transcripts, asking me about when I took stats, they just understood that I took it in high school. The important part? It was a college course.
They insisted I that still needed a math class. I didn’t try to clarify. (How much simpler could it be?) When I took it, I was overwhelmed and failed miserably.
I choked this situation because I didn’t try to explain further. They choked it because they didn’t read carefully.
So, other than raising my GPA so Cal Poly Pomona will accept me, I’m retaking a course that won’t make a difference toward my Computer Information Systems degree.
What else are you taking?
That’s it. I feel slow at grasping the concepts compared to others. So, I’m not taking anything else. When I’m not at school, I’m either doing homework or working.
How about photography?
I still carry my camera everywhere, but I [seriously] photowalk on the weekends if I’m not tired. I’m still open for [natural light] portrait sessions and band photography. Just contact me, m’kay?
Aren’t you in a band, too?
Oh yeah. Listen to The Scarlet Paradigm.
Mel's Drive-In
Unlike my other photo of the Mel’s Drive-In sign near Hollywood and Highland, producing this was more involved.
I got closer because there was a billboard behind and to the left of the “Open 24 Hours” sign. Then, I took three landscape exposures (from bottom to top) to create a panorama.
After stitching the photos together, I used lens correction to reduce the distortion 18mm would make. Then, I cloned out the corner of a building at the lower left side of the frame.
Since I finally learned [non-destructive] dodging and burning, I used that technique to subtly brighten the darker areas of the sign.
Back in Lightroom, I square cropped the photo then used a few presets:
- Matt’s Auto Adjustment (Everything Else)
- Matt’s Edge Darkening 1 (Light)
- Matt’s Deep Blue Sky (Level 1)
To finish things off, I slightly increased the exposure and fill light to my liking.
I hope you like it!
Pulled over by Los Angeles Port Police
While sailing around the Los Angeles Harbor in San Pedro, we got pulled over the the Los Angeles Port Police.
Sail boating and whale watching
In a few hours, I need to meet a couple friends in West Los Angeles, carpool to San Pedro, then board her dad’s sailboat to go whale watching.
This’ll be fascinating. Hopefully we see some cool stuff out there.
Chris is letting me borrow his Canon EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM[1. So generous - thanks man!], plus a friend at work let me borrow his Canon EF 1.4x II Extender. That’ll be 98-280mm of goodness.
Anyway, just thought I’d mention that. Enjoy the rest of your weekend!
