I gotta learn WordPress

Kare is switching their host from a free provider (that helps out non-profits) to the host I’m using. To you, that probably doesn’t mean much. For me, it’s quite a bit. I think they’re basically looking to me for setting the site up. It’s not that great right now, and they want it to be more functional for more than one person in the organization.

Why am I looking to WordPress? Because it’s powerful, and it can be a CMS. I don’t know where to start, though. I don’t know CSS, PHP, or HTML, except to tweak things here and there.

Other than looking through the WordPress Codex and support forums, any advice?

A quick search of the support forums and codex are always a good start. The forums particularily can yeild some ideas on how to proceed.
WordPress does have a wide variety of plug-ins available as well, which can seriously enhance and add many features.

Thanks Brendan! Any leads you think would be worthwhile reads to make things not look so “blog-ish”?

It will depend on what you are after basically. Alex recent ran a theme competition so there’s a source of ‘pre-cut’ themes to play with. The Weblog Tools Collection is another source for plugins, themes and the like. Start with the basics, and fiddle with some of the great templates available, once you get familiar with the_post loop etc, you’ll be able to branch out and start hacking. :)

I suppose I should install Xampp and jump in. Would you suggest looking at one of the more simple themes and looking at its code?

I saw the theme competition - so much stuff! :)

If you mean that you’d like to learn how to turn WP into a CMS, then look no further than this theme and its companion plugins: http://www.semiologic.com/projects/sem-theme/

Thanks James! I’ll look into that as my first stop then. Boo-yah!

Have a look at Holy Shmoly! Donncha, friend of mine, is one of the Wordpress developers.

Thanks Mel - Donncha’s been on my blogroll and news aggregator for quite sometime. :)

I find just leeching off the other WP users out there seems to get me by. I’d love to give back… but hey… I know squat.

I was thinking the same thing - but I think I need to understand a bit more, especially where I am in this whole thing for the organization’s website. I definitely want to be a major factor in this. If I’m not learning anything, I’m getting worse.
