I feel compelled to write something for today, in case I don’t get a chance to during the day. So, I’ll talk about how things were yesterday…you know, all the fun I have since it’s vacation!
I read the CNET News.com article “Worst spyware queues up” this morning. It’s good to see what names pop up, in case a friend or client needs help on their computer. The part that caught my eye really ticked me off:
Webroot recommends that people install Microsoft security patches, avoid using freeware and disable downloads via ActiveX in Internet Explorer.
Avoid using freeware? That’s the one thing that keeps us going! Basically all of the programs listed here is freeware! What about Firefox? OpenOffice? AVG Anti Virus Free Edition? 7-Zip? Filezilla?
Ridiculous. You simply do not have to fork out cash for everything. You can donate to keep the developers going, but they’re not looking for money…they’re just trying to help out everyone where others have failed.
Have any of you ever been hanging out with a bunch of friends, and you want to go get a bite to eat…but get so indecisive? Just the other day, Bryan went out to this fast food place (not a national chain) and some chili fries. They weren’t great, and Bryan wished we would’ve went to The Hat instead. Well, at least for chili cheese fries.
Bryan thinks from now on, wherever Bryan goes, Bryan’s going to jot down how well Bryan liked the food, service, and waiting time, as well as what kind of food the place serves. Sounds geeky, but whatever…Bryan would hate to waste Bryan’s time at a place Bryan didn’t like the first time around. Bryan tends to forget sometimes.
Bryan is typing this in 3rd person to be weird, plus Bryan’s getting hungry…
I didn’t realize Yahoo! has a blog. So, upon stumbling onto it, turns out Yahoo! Maps has a new feature:
Yahoo! Maps now includes real-time traffic, construction & accident reports, and even speed/congestion information which can then be overlaid onto your map or driving directions. When you pull up a map or driving directions, click on the module on the right to activate traffic info.
It’s another alternative to SigAlert… ![]()
As the title says, I’ve started the redux of the site. I officially moved all of the old site to a subdomain (old1.btvillarin.com). Redirects have been set in case anyone linked to my pages. However, I will be weeding pages out that don’t seem to be getting any hits. I hope that none of them do - they’ve basically been old and outdated, although they do seem to work. If the need arises, I’ll recreate them in my blog here.
The Vector Linux 3.2 review is there, but definitely outdated. FYI: Vector Linux is now is now up to 4.3!
Most of all - I’m hoping nothing breaks. I think I did everything this morning in about 20 minutes, and I clicked all the links to make sure that they redirect properly. I’m taking a big gamble, that’s for sure. I’ll definitely recheck everything again five more times when I get home in a couple hours.
Maybe I’ll just delete everything, check my logs, then if anything pops up repeatedly, I’ll reupload the file(s).
Sorry for the post delay. On with it…
It seems like its been awhile since I’ve posted. Do I appear to post regularly?
I was going back and forth from procrastinating to study for my last final (for Accounting 101) and actually studying. Looking back on this last week, I’m somewhat unsure what I did exactly before Friday.
I’ve been busy the last two days, but I’ll post 4-5 hours from now. (I really want Matt’s Asides for these small posts.)
PC Perspective has a thread on tweaking the Firefox settings a bit to gain faster web browsing. They aren’t anything new, though. All the tweaks mentioned were already written out on the Firefox Help page: Enable Pipelining and Speed up page rendering. However, this wasn’t stated for the pipelining tweak at that forum thread:
Pipelining is an experimental feature, designed to improve page-load performance, that is unfortunately not well supported by some web servers and proxies.
Cross-check Firefox Help and the Firefox Support forums before implementing a Firefox tweak. I’d hate to see people get their IP address banned because of this tweak. (Feel free to comment about this opinion, that’s what I’m deducing from the the quote above.)

Back in September, I posted about CutePDF. However, I think between then and now, on numerous occassions, it would kick print spooler into utilizing all my CPU power until I ended the process. I finally got around to uninstalling it, putting PDFCreator in its place. (It’s also on TheOpenCD, too, but I found out about it before.)
I was searching through my archives, and it seems that I haven’t posted about these cool Adblock filters. The ones I linked to before were pretty lengthy, but these…these are short, sweet, and get the job done. Enjoy!
Oh yeah, it’s been weird, but my Firefox install has been crashing on me lately. (Note: I’ve been really daring with my software installs.) Anyway, if you want to see if Firefox has some bugs left from previous versions, you should check out this article from “Zachariah” on “How to really do a fresh install [of Firefox]“.
Update: Seeing how this is one of the most popular posts here, it’d help to update it. Instead of manually entering in the Adblock filters, Filterset.G works better and updates automatically.
