Nifty Google stuff

A few things were mentioned on Urbnmix.net that caught my eye:

Google Desktop Search (Beta)

Skinning Gmail with a custom stylesheet

I’ll keep an eye on the desktop search utility. However, if someone can get a bluish-type stylesheet for Gmail, I’d love that. The default one right now isn’t that bad, but I simply like blue better. Blue is more…favorite.

Speaking of Google, my site got spidered and cached yesterday and the day before. I take it that whenever I post, it’ll get spidered the following day for sure now. That’s nice to see.

Edit: I guess Google Desktop Search was written about today.

Google Launches Desktop Search Beta (Extremetech)

Google Your Desktop (O’Reilly Network)

I’m feeling depressed

I don’t what’s the matter with me. I hate school, I get edgy really easily, and I’ve got a short fuse. I’m not sure what to do about it, other than try to cope. I’ve got girl problems with this one person, too, and it’s been tough to not to focus on that. I’ve learned that with all that’s going on now, I don’t need that at this point in my life. However, it’s a constant struggle.

In any case, if you’re reading this, can you please say a prayer for me? Thank you.

Sorry this isn’t exactly the regular post you’re used to seeing, but I figure I need all the help I can get.

I’m not high

If you search for “narfed” on Google, my blog is the first thing that pops up. However, the second or third listing shows the UrbanDictionary meaning of “narfed”.

To get high from smoking marijuana.

With Pinky in my header and whatnot, I’m trying to associate my goofiness with him. Did anybody think of Pinky before marijuana when they saw the name of my blog? Until now, I didn’t know that narf actually meant something, other than being one of Pinky’s odd exclamations. I wouldn’t want people to associate the latter with me, because I don’t want anything to do with that. Thanks.

Hilarious IM Fight

This IM fight is funny stuff I tell ya…

All is valid

Valid XHTML, that is. I was able to figure out, surprisingly quickly, where I went wrong - thanks to the W3C Markup Validation Service. The links page doesn’t have an extra bullet now - yay!

For those who don’t use Firefox and the Web Developer Extension, pressing a quick key combination (Ctrl + Shift + V) automatically validates the site you’re currently browsing in a new tab. Checking “Show Source” makes it easier to find where you went wrong right in the source, especially since the WP template isn’t exactly contained within a single file.

Edit: Thanks for the correction, Anthony!

Columbus Day

Note to self: Banks aren’t open on Columbus Day, even though everything else is.

I’m just patiently waiting for the rest of a deposit to go through, so I can use some money once again. Unfortunately, I wasn’t aware of the holiday yesterday that nobody else seems to celebrate. Luckily, I actually went shopping and I have some food at home.

Member needs a specific LED

One of the long-time members in the forums needs somebody’s help - if anyone has some time to assist him, I know he’d really appreciate it. :)

I want to mod my DigiDoc 5 LCD backlight… but it uses a rather non-standard backlight.

The problem is that in my country, these LEDs seem to be unfindable. They can only be bought in large quantaties from LEDTronics. [If] someone here works at an company that works a lot with electronics or studies [electrical] engineering at a university, then you [might] be able to request a sample of them.

Maybe one of you can be so kind to try this? [If] it works send me the LEDs (if you use a standard envelope, the sending costs are very low).

I’m seraching for 2 LEDs with the following serial number: RAB362AG3K.
[If] they don’t want to sample that, the cheaper: RAB362G1K or RAB362G4B.

You can help him out by registering in our forums and replying in the thread where he posted his inquiry. Thanks!

Messing with WP

I’m not just thinking about the site redux, I’m starting to try stuff out.

After this morning’s tough accounting exam, I came home wanting to not think about school. So, I dove right in hoping to accomplish something:

There are some quirks I have to work though, such as getting this layout valid again, and figure out why there’s an extra bullet on the links page. I have a very basic gist of how to try this again, so I’m going to give it another shot later this evening. I’d like to be able to use Kubrick with a horizontal navigation menu, kinda like how Michael Heilemann has his setup. If I can’t, it’s totally cool.

Or, I might revert back to a non-Kubrick type layout, where the template isn’t so . . . complex (at least for me).

By the way, I don’t have to buy the domain name “All Narfed Up”. But then again, it is available! I’ll explain the cool name when I make that about page I’ve been aiming to do sometime.

One more thing: I got around to updating the forums to 1.3.1. It wasn’t even that many files to upload. In any case, it looks fine now - let’s hope it doesn’t get hacked!

I have IPB 1.3.1

Thanks to Marvin’s generosity, I have the last free Invision Board 1.3.1 script. The current forums are running on 1.3, so this’ll patch it right before 2.0. I’ll update the forums to this latest version at the least, but I’ll need to find out if it’s legal to continue to run it. (Let me know thru the comments!)

Otherwise:

Google SMS

Google SMS (Short Message Service) enables you to easily get precise answers to specialized queries from your mobile phone or device. Send your query as a text message and get phone book listings, dictionary definitions, product prices and more. Just text. No links. No web pages. Simply the answers you’re looking to find.

Since I’m into WP, I looked up the definition of “blog”, and a few seconds later, received three text messages. They were out of order, but gave what I wanted.

I don’t travel too much, but I do know times when this service would’ve been handy on the road. If those awesome people in Mountain View develop this, I think I could find use for it!
